Look, a tile blog!

I've been answering questions sent to me by people doing tile on their own and having a fine time indeed. I've been getting such good questions from people that I decided to start a blog where people can comment on questions and answers.

My phylosophy has always been that the more people you can get input from, the more you can learn. Everyone has different experience and different points of view and no one knows it all. I've been doing this since 1984 and I don't know it all. I try to learn something new every day and with everyone's help we can all learn from each other.

Cheers,
Joanne Rigutto

Hi, my name is Leah and I am very interested in tiles. I am remodeling my kitchen and thinking of using this gorgeous glass tile... cranberry crush... for a backsplash. I found it at www.northeasterntile.com and they are running a promo for 60% off! Anyway do you think a red backsplash would be too intense? I want to do a gray floor, a cool off white paint, and then a really intense red backsplash. I'm so happy to find a fellow tile connoisseur. I hope you post again soon!

Hi, I just found your blog and thought it was great, as a professional tiler in London it always amazes me when people ring me up saying ive done some tiling in my bathroom and now the tiles are falling off or are cracking...

There is always someone willing to answer questions online and if people just took the time to look they would avoid these problems.

You deserve a big pat on the back!

For high end tile murals would you splurge by getting handmade stuff like this or would kind of cut corners e.g. try to do it yourself?

I was very close to tiling my own bathroom. I started looking at tiles for ideas from some local providers. During my quest to find the perfect tile (something classy and modern looking) I stumbled into One stop Flooring in Phoenix and the price was so reasonable I ended up hiring them to do the job for me. Great selection without overwhelming me. So glad I decided to go with tile for this project.

HELP??!!!
Hello! I have an urgent need for advice & stumbled onto your blog. I hope you all can help me. After hours of talking with all the folks I know & hardware/glass stores, I went ahead with a project, and now I have some doubts about our materials. We are doing an outdoor glass tiled mosaic mural, three panels 3' x 6' that will be installed using 3 heavy wooden cylindrical posts (each panel will be bolted on it's left & right to a post), and the posts will be mounted several feet into the ground with Sacrete. It will look like an upright triangular prism when finished & displayed for about 7 months outside. We planned to glue glass tiles onto 1/4" thick plexiglass with the idea that it could be illuminated from the inside with solar lighting. We'll use 100% silicone based adhesive to glue the tiles & then grout it. Now that I have the large plexi pieces & see how flexible they are, I'm frankly worried! Can you tell me anything about grouting something like this? Do you think if we bolt it as planned that the structure will be strong enough? I could really use some expert advice!
Thanks so much!
Dee

Customer service is critical when buying tile. Most stores have no idea what they are selling. There is a store in Brooklyn, New York called Italian Tile. The staff is very knowledgeable, and the prices are factory direct! Great Store!

I agree with the customer service thing- I am not a tile guru - although I am someone who likes to save money - so I hit the online shops.

I am currently renovating my house - kitchen bathroom & fireplace by myself.

I have very little experience and have turned to blogs such as these for more information.

I needed stainless steel tile, glass tile, stone tile & something different in tile for my fireplace.

I found this great site called Eglasstiles.com they had such a nice selction of glass tile, metal tile, stone tile and even some unique tile that I needed. I called because I wasn't sure how much tile I would need and I wanted to know more about the tile ...they were such a big help! E Glass Tiles team member was so friendly so helpful and so knowledgeable! The prices were so inexpensive and the tiles were beautiful! They arrived 3 days later and they came in perfect condition!
Visit eglasstiles.com!

So you are right when you talk about customer service it definitely goes a long way!

keep up this blog - its such a great tool!

Hello!!
I have a question about tiles. I have a friend that has a hight impact tile florin, and there is something coming out of it. Let me explain: there is a black spot, followed by a sticky liquid (no smell). She've tried clorox, alcohol, tile cleaners, and nothing works. With the clorox, it goes away for about 4-5 days, and then it starts all over again. This thing is eating up the floor!
Do you know what it could be? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!
Thanks!
Isabel

When you use back splash tiles in the bathroom or kitchen you should be careful with the size, shape, color tiles to be used. You can also use the color variation from tile to be used or by using different forms.

I installed marble tile in my bathroom a couple of years ago. Thru use, the tile next to the commode is dull and I have been unable to bring back the shine after using a professional automotive body buffer and polishing compound.

Can you tell me the proper pad/compound to use to bring back the finish?

Hello,
We have a pebble shower floor in our master bath. It's on the lower level in a humid location. After six months or so of use, I reseal it using a Tile Lab sealer. The first bottle I got from the tile store, after that I've bought it from HD. It comes in a bottle that's the color of a yellow school bus. It's very easy to seal but you have to wait a day before using the shower. The grout was whatever we were using for the floor and wall tile (sanded regular grout I think) but it did take a lot of grout. Once in a while I notice that pink bacteria forming where the wall meets the floor. I think it's because of the humidity (Wash. state), the downstairs location, and the fact that the pebbles allow water to pool in places. Flat Mosaic Tile
The bacteria is easy to remove with regular bathroom cleaners and a scrub brush, so except for the occasional scrub it's about the same as regular cleaning.
